As a premier global braiding company, we boast an assemblage of braiders, twister spindles, winders, and numerous coating towers, extruders and other properietary fiber conversion platforms. Kevlar, a synthetic fiber best known for its use in ballistic body armor, brings strength and durability to a wide range of applications. With a fiber five times the strength of steel on an equal-weight basis, Kevlar is used for lightweight applications where high tensile strength is needed. Kevlar provides an excellent solution for protective solutions where cut-resistance and tensile strength are needed. Kevlar fiber and filament comes in a multitude of types based on application and need, all of which Atkins & Pearce can tailor for your end-use application.
In 1964, after a slew of fiery race car accidents resulting in the deaths of multiple drivers, DuPont™ created the early versions of the fire resistant Nomex suits we see today on drivers across the NASCAR and racing universe. This fiber has brought that same flame resistant technology to protect materials and people from intense heat and flames across many industries and applications. Nomex is an inherently thermal-resistant fiber and can withstand extreme stress.
Technora is a high strength, chemical resistant aramid fiber, closely related to Twaron® and Kevlar®. Technora was developed by Teijin and has been commercially available since 1987 for applications needing high tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and long-term dimensional stability. Atkins & Pearce can manipulate Technora fiber into anything from a winch rope to an overbraid for a rubber application.
Twaron is Teijin Aramid’s flagship para-aramid product, a superior high performance fiber with a wide range of uses and applications. Twaron offers a combination of thermal stability, chemical resistance, durability and mechanical properties. Twaron has low flammability, no melting point and degradation only starts at 500°C. Similar to Kevlar®, it also provides excellent cut-through protection and can be used for ballistic protection purposes.
Dyneema, the ‘World’s Strongest Fiber™’, is respected as the premium brand for ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. Dyneema provides unmatched tensile strength at light weights, finding its way into a wide variety of industries and applications. Atkins & Pearce is the North American Premium Distributor Partner for Dyneema.
Halar ECTFE is a semi-crystalline, melt processable, partially fluorinated polymer and is specifically suitable as a coating material in applications where protection and anti-corrosion is needed due its combination of properties. Halar is resistant to acids, caustic media, oxidizing agents and many solvents, even at higher temperatures, and is similar in chemical resistance performance to PTFE. Halar has excellent barrier properties, making it suited for a wide range of applications involving the need for a protective solution.
Vectran is a high performance multifilament yarn spun from liquid crystal polymer (LCP). With exceptional strength and rigidity, Vectran is five times stronger than steel and ten times stronger than aluminum on a pound for pound basis. Vectran’s high strength with virtually no creep allows the fiber to be manufactured into high performance ropes and cords that are able to hold high loads for extended periods of time. Vectran can easily replace steel and stainless steel constructions.
PBI, polybenzimidazole, is an organic fiber typically used to provide thermal stability for high temperature applications. PBI fiber does not burn in air and will not melt or drip when exposed to flame. PBI also retains its strength and flexibility after being exposed to flame. PBI is often used in flame resistant fabric blends as it combines flame and thermal resistance with comfort and durability. The fiber is ideal for high temperatures as it has no melting point.
Teflon PTFE fluoropolymer fiber is a highly chemical resistant fiber that does not degrade at continuous temperature exposures below 400°F. Teflon also performs well at extremely low temperatures, able to be used at temperatures as low as -450°F, although it does become less ductile. Teflon will not melt or drip and is considered to be a non-flammable organic fiber. Teflon fiber is used for a wide range of industries, including electrical, aerospace and automotive.
Ryton polyphenylene sulfide, PPS, offers superior performance for a wide range of fiber applications with strengths in thermal stability, chemical resistance and flame resistance while offering superior mechanical and electrical properties. Ryton holds a strong reputation as a high performance engineering thermoplastic and can be derived into fiber or textile forms for use in coal boilers, electrical insulation and specialty membranes.
Torcon, a high performance polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fiber, possesses excellent heat resistance, flame retardant properties, and good chemical resistance. It’s an important high temperature thermoplastic polymer with its combination of resistance to heat, acids and alkalies, mildew, bleaches, aging, sunlight and abrasion. Torcon is used for everything from drier canvas to electrical insulation and is considered to be an environmentally friendly fiber that can be incinerated after use in harsh applications.
Zylon, a polyphenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO) fiber, has high tensile strength, thermal stability and flame resistance as compared to organic fibers. Zylon is used in a huge breadth of applications, including sporting goods, aerospace and high tension rope. The fiber, stronger than steel and twice as strong as Kevlar, decomposes only at temperatures in excess of 1470°F.
